FAQs – Lightning

Q?

Is it true that Lightning Rods attract lightning to your home or building?

A.

Absolutely FALSE, No! Lightning rods do not attract lightning! They dramatically lessen the likely hood that your home, or building will be struck, but if it does get struck, it takes the charge safely away from the structure, and into the ground.

Q?

How effective are lightning rods in preventing house fires?

A.

A properly designed and installed lightning protection system (LPS) that includes lightning rods, and surge protection devices (SPD) is virtually 100% effective at preventing any damage what so ever from lightning, even if you take a direct strike.

Q?

At what stage of construction do we have our lightning rods installed?

A.

During the electrical rough in stage is best when the walls are open, and before ANY insulation is installed yet. The roofing has been applied, and we can work with your electrician to provide the best protection possible.

Q?

If my home is already finished, can my rods still be installed so that there not noticeable?

A.

YES! A large percentage of our installs are of course retrofit to existing homes and businesses.  We are true craftsman, and know how to install our systems in the best way possible for the system to work correctly (to keep your home from burning down) first, and to be as invisible as possible.

Q?

We were thinking of just having “Whole House” surge protection installed on our electrical panels, if we do that do we still need the Lightning Rods to protect our home?

A.

YES! Surge protection that is UL Listed and Lightning Rated is an important part of a COMPLETE Lightning Protection System to protect electronics but it is the job of the LIGHTNING RODS to keep your home safe from burning down!

Q?

What materials do you use in a Lightning System? What are the rods and cable made of?

A.

The majority of our residential systems have always been nearly 100% copper,  we can use a combination of copper, stainless steel, and aluminum to make the system compatible with the home or building it is to protect.  If you have a shingled roof,  typically you would have an all copper system whereas if you have a painted metal roof, then the rods and cable would be aluminum for compatibility with the metal roof and copper down leads, and grounding rods taking the energy into the earth. Either way – Copper or Aluminum, the system is designed to look great and to last for the lifetime of the home.

Q?

How long will the installation take, and when can you get started?

A.

A complete LPS is usually installed within 1-2 days. You are typically on the schedule for about 2 weeks while the underground utilities are being located then marked, then job materials and planning to come together. Once you’ve wisely decided to have Vickery install the LPS-DONT WAIT! Our motto is: “Better a Year too Early than A Minute TOO LATE!”

Q?

Why can’t I buy the materials on-line and just climb up there and put this stuff in myself?

A.

Because Lightning Protection is A Very Specialized, LIFE SAFETY SYSTEM! It IS NOT a “Do it yourself project”!  The LPS Design and installation are TOO CRITICAL to take chances with.[spacer]
