Lightning Rods

Lightning rods don’t attract lightning, they help to prevent it. Here’s how: lightning rods have sharp points where coronal discharge occurs because the positively charged tip of the rod tears atoms apart in it’s region and continuously fills the atmosphere around the structure with positive ions. When the negatively charged cloud comes near a structure that is protected with lightning rods, then those positive ions will be pulled up into the cloud, thus partially neutralizing the cloud in the region of the structure and decreasing the probability of strike.
